Treating Viral Infections with Essential Oils

Essential oil is made from collecting the volatile aromatic compounds from plant sources. This is why essential oils are also known as volatile oils. There are many ways to extract the aroma compounds of plants. These processes include distillation, expression and solvent extraction.

Essential oils are typically used in aromatherapy. They are also popular as an additive to various personal care products. But did you know they could be used to treat viral diseases as well?

Dozens of scientific studies show that most types of essential oils contain antiviral compounds that fight infections. In today’s post, we are listing down excellent essential oils to treat various viral infections:

Polio

Polio – also known as infantile paralysis – is caused by the poliovirus. It’s a highly contagious disease that causes leg paralysis. In the 20th century, there was an outbreak of polio and this prompted health authorities to find ways to control the outbreak. Some health experts found that poliovirus could be controlled by administering essential oils. These essential oils include frankincense, ylang-ylang, myrtle, sage and wintergreen. These essential oils contain powerful antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Fever

Fever is not a disease but a symptom of an underlying condition. In most cases, it’s triggered by a viral infection. That’s why don’t ignore a fever, it could be a sign of a more serious medical condition. It could potentially hint at serious health complications too.

When the body is plagued with viruses, it raises the temperature. The higher temperature will kill the viruses. You can bring a fever down by using essential oils with antiviral properties. These essential oils include eucalyptus, sandalwood, ginger and rosemary. You can also use lavender, white fir, bergamot or lemon essential oils.

Herpes

Herpes is a viral disease categorized according on the body part that’s infected. It’s characterized by the formation of blisters in the affected area. These blisters are also called cold sores. Blisters in the genital area are referred to as genital herpes. Cold sores on the mouth is referred to as oral herpes and so on. This highly contagious condition is caused by the cytomegalovirus or Epstein-Barr virus.

To treat herpes using essential oils, we recommend Melissa and lemon balm essential oils. These oils could be used topically or as part of an aromatherapy treatment. Melissa and Lemon balm oil heal herpes sores and inhibit future outbreaks.

Flu

Common flu is caused by the influenza virus. Your susceptibility to this viral infection depends on the strength of your immune system. If it’s weak, you are more likely to suffer from flu several times per year.

You can treat flu by boosting your immune system. You can do this by using essential oils too. Start by applying essential oils topically. We recommend lavender, bergamot, eucalyptus or Melissa essential oils. Just apply it topically, let the skin absorb the oil to strengthen the immune system.

Aromatic essential oils with antiviral properties also help uplift the mood. This too helps build resistance against common viruses.

Upper Respiratory Infections

Essential oils are effective treatment for upper respiratory infections. These essential oils include cinnamon, thyme, and clove. These oils contain antiviral, antifungal and antimicrobial properties that kill off bacteria strains of Streptococcus and pneumonia.
